The regular enemies are just there as practice fodder to try out strats as well as a indicator of whether you're underleveled/geared. When you unlock a new job, you should be thinking: okay, which of these abilities would be great to add to my party? You're basically building up an flexible arsenal of abilities (not just in your current party build, but what they've learned and can switch to) so you're ready for the next weird boss battle the game throws at you and can adjust accordingly.
